Unlimited – Is it really?

We have had a couple of enquiries recently, asking why we don’t offer unlimited disk space or data transfer, so thought it’d be a good idea to explain.

The webhosting industry has been using the term ‘unlimited’ for a long time, and now it’s become common place with broadband and mobile phone providers too – indeed, we use it to describe some of our features, but what does that really mean?  If any host could actually offer unlimited disk space and data transfer for a few £’s a month, then huge websites like www.google.co.uk or www.bbc.co.uk could surely save themselves a fortune by moving to one of them?  The fact is – there is no such thing as unlimited disk space, or unlimited data transfer – at some point there must be a limit, the problem is that you just don’t know what it is in advance.

Our hosting packages have very high limits, 99.9% of users don’t come close to them, so it’d be very easy for us to change the wording and just say ‘Oh yes, it’s unlimited’ – however, we prefer the honest approach.  You know how much you can use, and so you can plan – if your site becomes super-popular you’ll know when you are reaching the limits of your account, avoiding a nasty surprise when you hit a limit that you didn’t know about.  Incidentally if you do exceed your limits we will make sure we contact you before doing anything about it.

We do use ‘unlimited’ to describe how many email accounts, mySQL databases and FTP accounts you can have – and you really can have as many as you want, so long as you remain within your disk-space and data-transfer limits.
